Labels: auto-complete and “move to”

The buttons and menus at the top of your inbox look a bit different: there’s a new “Labels” button that makes labeling messages even easier. Turn on keyboard shortcuts and hit “L” to bring up your labels, and auto-complete will take it from there. Use the “Move to” button to label and archive in just one step — just like you would with a folder. Learn more

The new labels menu seems like it will be as useful as the “Mark as read button” hack in Google Labs :)

While browsing Nokia Download the other day on my phone I came across something new (very rare) which seems like something that it’s about time someone wrote.

It’s an application called JoikuSpot that connectes your phone to 3G and then uses the wifi chip as an access point instead of a client.

Ok so if you just want to connect a laptop to the web it’s easier to just connect your phone via a cable or bluetooth but some devices either can’t run the Nokia software (like an iPod touch) or maybe you’re using Linux and it’s just way more complicated to get it to connect via your phone. With this software you pretty much just run it and connect to the access point as you would with any other.

The other benefit of course is that you can connect multiple devices at once.

I came across this software that sort of “mods” your Canon camera to give it quite a few extra features. It’s basically for the “point and shoot” type models, not the SLR’s which would already have most of those features.

Whats nice is that you just have to copy some files onto a memory card then turn the camera on with it in and you can use it, and it’s non permanent so you can turn the camera on and not activate it and it will be like normal.

It’s called CHDK. http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK

Q. What does the CHDK program do?

A. CHDK enhances the capabilities of your camera in a non-destructive, non-permanent way.

After loading of CHDK program you will get the following functionality:
Shutter-priority (Tv) exposure - via shutter value override feature
Aperture-priority (Av) exposure - via aperture value override feature
Shooting in RAW, with RAW Average, RAW Sum, and RAW Develop features
Live histogram (RGB, blended, luminance and for each RGB channel)
Zebra mode (a live view of over and under-exposed areas of your picture)
Depth-of-field (DOF)-calculator, Hyperfocal-calculator with instant Hyperfocal and Infinity focus-set, and more
Battery indicator
RAW and Video space-remaining gauges with custom low-limit alerts
USB cable remote shutter release
Motion-detection trigger - automatically fires camera on motion detection. (Fast enough to capture lightning strikes.)
Customizable high-speed continuous (burst) Shutter-based (Tv), aperture-based (Av) and ISO-based exposure bracketing (unlimited shots)
Focus bracketing (unlimited shots)
99 constant bit-rate and 10 constant-quality video compression levels
Elimination of 1 Gig video-size limit
Zoom during video function (for cameras without this feature)
Shutter, Aperture, and ISO Overrides
Ultra-long shutter speeds - up to 64 seconds
Ultra-fast shutter speeds - up to 1/10,000″ and higher
High-speed Flash Sync at all speeds up to 1/64,000 second (even faster in some cameras)
Custom user-editable visible Grids for framing, cropping, and alignment
File browser
Text reader
Calendar
Some fun tools and games
Fully customizable CHDK display, info placement, user-colors, fonts in menus, etc.
Custom CHDK User-Menu (for instant recall of up to 10 favorite functions)
Scripts execution - including exposure bracketing, focus bracketing, intervalometer and more)

Q. What camera models are supported by the CHDK program?

A. Currently, the CHDK program is available for Canon digital cameras of the following models:

Opera SpeedDial is so awesome it was one of the quickest features copied by other browsers. Unfortunately the default amount of sites of 9 (3×3) is rather limiting. I know research shows people generally visit less than 10 sites but I visit more and found myself really running out of space and having to relegate some sites to “bookmarks”.

Fortunately I found a way to add more “slots” to put speed dial sites in :)

  • Open a tab and go to “about:opera” to see what your preferences directory is. It should be along the lines of

 C:\Documents and Settings\<YOUR NAME>\Application Data\Opera\Opera\profile

  • Go to that directory and open up speeddial.ini
  • Close Opera
  • Add the following lines to the file:

[Size]
Rows=3
Columns=5

I found that 3×5 works quite well because it’s just utilising my widescreen space better, adjust to your tastes.

  • Start Opera

It amazes me how many things claim to not work in Opera, yet when you set Opera to “Mask as IE” they work perfectly. The last 2 examples are the HTMLArea wysiwyg editor built into a number of other website apps, and the new FNB internet banking website. So how do you do this little trick?

Go to the site giving problems. Right click, Edit site preferences…, Network, “Mask as Internet Explorer”.

This will save the setting for every time you visit that site. Refresh/Reload the site so it picks up the changes and basically enables anything that was disabled.
